In contrast to competitors, the discount supermarketer is bypassing Los Angeles and targeting San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
The company, which operates more than 1,200 stores in 32 states from Kansas to the East Coast, is seeking to build a $55 million complex in Moreno Valley that will serve as its regional headquarters and distribution center, according to city documents.
Aldi issued a statement saying it is "in the initial stages of discussions to potentially locate a warehouse" in Moreno Valley, in Riverside County.
San Bernardino and Riverside, say analysts, have the right demographics for the chain, namely, a high density of low-income consumers. And Trader Joe’s Co. stores of comparable size — which are run by a subsidiary of Aldi International — are sparse in Riverside.
