EDMONTON, Alberta – Amazon has opened its first Canadian disaster-relief hub dedicated to wildfire response, expanding its emergency response network as Canada faces increasingly severe wildfire seasons.
The new facility, which became operational Wednesday, is stocked with specialized emergency supplies that Amazon will donate and deliver at no cost to nonprofit organizations responding to wildfires and other disasters. The company said it is already monitoring hundreds of active wildfires across Canada and related air-quality issues, and is prepared to fulfill requests from relief organizations as needed.
The Edmonton hub will provide items such as air purifiers, N95 masks, respirators, helmets, goggles, heavy-duty boots, gloves, and sifters for use before, during, and after wildfire emergencies. Initial nonprofit partners include Team Rubicon Canada and the Canadian Red Cross.
Amazon said the new facility reflects the growing challenges posed by Canada's wildfire season, which has been starting earlier, lasting longer, and becoming more difficult to contain. The company also cited forecasts that El Niño conditions could increase wildfire risks globally.
The Edmonton location is Amazon's second facility dedicated to wildfire relief. The company launched its first wildfire hub in California in 2024, months before major wildfires struck Los Angeles and Southern California. Following those response efforts, Amazon said it has increased the California hub's inventory fivefold to strengthen future disaster response capabilities.
Together, the two wildfire hubs are designed to enable faster delivery of emergency supplies to nonprofit partners responding to wildfires and other natural disasters.
While the facility is now operational, Amazon plans to hold a formal grand opening in October, when the hub is expected to reach full capacity with more than 180,000 emergency relief supplies.
