SEATTLE — Amazon posted stronger-than-expected second-quarter results on Thursday, buoyed by continued strength in its core retail business, record Prime Day sales, and expanded delivery capabilities that are bringing same-day and next-day shipping to more customers than ever.
Net sales for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, climbed 13% year-over-year to $167.7 billion, beating Wall Street’s $162.1 billion consensus. Excluding favorable currency impacts, sales were up 12%. Earnings per share surged to $1.68 from $1.26 a year ago, well ahead of analysts' expectations for $1.33. Operating income jumped to $19.2 billion from $14.7 billion in the prior quarter.
Amazon’s North America segment, which includes its vast U.S. retail operations, grew 11% year-over-year to $100.1 billion in sales, while international sales rose 16% to $36.8 billion, or 11% excluding currency effects. CEO Andy Jassy said consumer demand has remained resilient through the first half of 2025, with no broad signs of price increases deterring shoppers.
Prime Day Shatters Records
While Prime Day fell just after the quarter’s end, Amazon made a point to tout the July sales event as its largest ever. Customers saved billions of dollars during the two-day shopping blitz, and independent sellers, many of them small businesses, posted record-breaking sales. Prime Day’s results reinforce the strength of Amazon’s consumer franchise even amid a volatile economic backdrop.
Delivery Expansion Reaches Smaller Communities
The company is pushing aggressively into faster delivery. By the end of 2025, Amazon plans to offer same-day or next-day delivery to tens of millions of additional U.S. customers across more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural communities. The move expands one of Amazon’s most important competitive advantages, allowing customers outside major metropolitan areas to receive items at urban-speed delivery times.
Expanding Brand Partnerships
Amazon continues to grow its selection of premium and lifestyle brands, announcing partnerships with Nike, Aveda, Away, Marc Jacobs Fragrances, Milk Makeup, and Origins. The new Nike storefront on Amazon will allow U.S. customers to shop a curated selection of footwear, apparel, and accessories directly from the iconic brand.
International Growth Accelerates
International segment sales outpaced the company average, with double-digit increases across multiple geographies. Amazon’s expansion into local brand offerings, regional fulfillment capabilities, and broader Prime benefits is helping fuel growth overseas.
Third-Quarter Outlook
Looking ahead, Amazon expects third-quarter net sales between $174 billion and $179.5 billion, representing growth of 10% to 13% year-over-year, ahead of Wall Street’s forecast. The company projected operating income between $15.5 billion and $20.5 billion.
While much investor attention has focused on Amazon’s cloud and AI initiatives, Jassy emphasized that the company’s retail foundation remains robust. “Our conviction that AI will change every customer experience is starting to play out,” he said, “but the core of our business — delivering selection, value, and convenience — has never been stronger.”
