Burlington Stores adds 12 new stores in July

Off-price retailer also celebrating the addition of its new distribution center in Georgia.

BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Burlington Stores Inc. remains ahead of its scheduled addition of 110 net new stores in 2026 after celebrating grand-openings at its two newest locations, in Salem, Ore., and Moscow, Idaho.

The off-price retailer is opening a dozen new stores this month after adding 40 locations in its fiscal first quarter.

Burlington’s new stores feature updated layouts, signage and fixtures intended to give shoppers an uncluttered path to name-brand apparel, footwear, and home goods offered at lower-than-prevailing prices.

The downsized format features stores with 25,000 gross square feet on average, down from 80,000 to 100,000 square feet outlets that prevailed at the time of the company’s founding, in 1972, as Burlington Coat Factory. It dropped coat from its name in  2009 to better reflect diversification of its product assortment.

“We’re very pleased with the progress we are making in transforming our legacy store base through relocations and downsizes,” CEO Michael O’Sullivan said in May during the retailers’ first-quarter earnings call. “Store relocations continue to perform well, typically delivering a sales lift of 5% to 10% as we upgrade the physical store and move into higher traffic centers with stronger co-tenancy. Our downsized program is also driving very strong results.”

O’Sullivan cited Burlington’s 6% increase in comparable-store sales in the quarter as evidence of the new format’s resonance with shoppers. Gains were particularly notable in the women’s apparel, beauty, and accessories categories, helping lift total sales to a 14% year-on-year gain.

Burlington Stores is considered the nation's third largest off-price retailer, after TJX Cos. and Ross Stores.

In June, Burlington executives gathered in Savannah, Ga., with economic development partners and community leaders for a ribbon-cutting at the company’s new distribution center. Encompassing 2.1 million square feet, the facility is Burlington's largest and most advanced distribution center to date, featuring 23 miles of conveyer systems designed to boost speed, efficiency, and flexibility.
