ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Since succeeding her father as president and chief executive officer of Wegmans Food Market Inc. in 2017, Colleen Wegman has expanded the store count by 20% while maintaining the food retailer’s reputation as one of the best places to shop at and to work for.

Wegman joined the family business in 1991 and has served as a store manager, director of e-commerce and senior vice president of merchandising. She’s had a hand in shaping some of the strategies that have become best practices in the retail food sector, including the steady introduction of high-profit margins from in-house brands and prepared foods. She was also responsible for the development of Wegmans’ Nature’s Marketplace departments.

Wegman is a 1994 graduate of the University of Colorado and in 2000 received an MBA from the Simon School at the University of Rochester.

The company’s mission is defined as helping people live healthier, better lives through exceptional food. Wegmans has garnered accolades from customers who appreciate the stores’ friendly, helpful staff and popular product offerings that contribute to Wegmans’ standing near the top of the industry rankings in terms of sales per square foot.

Another core value at Wegmans is making a difference in the communities it serves, in those areas that the retailer feels it can have the greatest impact, namely health, education and youth support, and economic mobility.

“Each year we receive hundreds of requests from residents for a store in Connecticut, so we’re excited to bring Wegmans to Norwalk and to get to know our new neighbors,” Wegman said in announcing plans for the company’s first store in the Nutmeg State, which is set to open this summer.
