Costco to open first stand-alone gas station

Unlike traditional Costco fueling centers, this station will not include a convenience store or warehouse.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Costco plans to open its first-ever stand-alone gas station in Mission Viejo, California. The former site of a Bed, Bath & Beyond will be transformed into a fueling hub exclusively for Costco members.

Slated to open in spring 2026, the Orange County location will be Costco’s largest gas station to date, boasting 40 fuel pumps. Positioned just off the busy I-5 freeway and two miles from the nearest Costco warehouse, the new station aims to bring convenience and value to the retailer’s membership base in Southern California.

Unlike traditional Costco fueling centers, this station will not include a convenience store or warehouse. It is a pure play in high-volume, member-only fuel sales. According to the Orange County Register, construction is expected to begin this fall.

While Costco has not officially confirmed long-range site plans, the expansion aligns with the retailer’s growing focus on fuel. In April 2025, Costco posted its two highest U.S. gas sales weeks ever, following the expansion of station hours and the openings of new locations.

CEO Ron Vachris noted that the extended hours were “a great indicator that the throughput for our members improved nicely, and we saw that immediately in gallon increases.”

With gasoline continuing to play a pivotal role in Costco’s value proposition, the Mission Viejo project could signal the start of a broader push into stand-alone fuel sites, offering loyal members another reason to stay gassed up—and signed up.
