Dollar General Corp. has promoted Todd Vasos, its chief merchant, to the post of chief operating officer and hired David D’Arezzo as chief marketing officer.

Vasos joined Dollar General in December 2008 as executive vice president and chief merchandising officer and was subsequently named divisional president while retaining the post of chief merchant. He is credited with rebuilding Dollar General’s category management organization and transforming its merchandise assortment strategy.

D’Arezzo joins Dollar General after serving most recently as executive vice president and COO of Grocer Supply, a grocery wholesale distributor based in Houston. Prior to that, D’Arezzo was senior VP and chief merchandising officer of Duane Reade, where he served under Dollar General’s current chairman and chief executive officer Rick Dreiling. Dreiling was chairman, president and CEO of Duane Reade before coming to Dollar General.

"The alignment of our organization across store operations, merchandising and supply chain with the promotion of Todd to chief operating officer and the addition of David will create an even stronger management team and position us well for future growth," said Dreiling. "Dollar General has strong management depth across the organization,, which clearly understands our industry, our operations and our people. Now is the perfect time to strengthen that expertise with the addition of David to the team. I believe his vision, ability to drive results and deep experience will provide a unique perspective to Dollar General."
