GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — As the United States prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026, Dollar General is marking the milestone with a series of national accolades underscoring its scale, longevity and cultural relevance as the country’s largest retailer by store count.

Founded in 1939, the discount retailer operates more than 20,000 stores across 48 states, serving customers in rural communities, suburban neighborhoods and urban markets. Company executives positioned the recent honors as a reflection of Dollar General’s enduring neighborhood model and its focus on value-driven essentials.

National Honors

Among the recognitions:

  • TIME America’s Most Iconic Companies 2026
    Dollar General ranked No. 44 on TIME’s inaugural list of 250 companies recognized for business and cultural legacy. Developed in partnership with Statista, the ranking commemorates America’s 250th anniversary and highlights companies that have shaped the nation through influence, longevity and impact.
  • Fortune World’s Most Admired Companies 2026
    The retailer ranked No. 5 in the Specialty Retailers category on Fortune’s annual list, which evaluates companies on criteria such as financial soundness, innovation, leadership, and global competitiveness.
  • Newsweek America’s Most Loved Brands 2025
    Named to Newsweek’s inaugural Most Loved Brands list, based on a survey of 24,000 U.S. consumers conducted with Plant-A-Insights, Dollar General was recognized for customer loyalty, trust and emotional affinity.

Executives said the recognitions align with the company’s “Serving Others” mission and its continued investment in omnichannel capabilities, including e-commerce and the myDG mobile app, alongside its expansive brick-and-mortar footprint.

As the country approaches its semiquincentennial celebration, Dollar General said it remains focused on expanding access to affordable essentials while reinforcing its role as a neighborhood general store in thousands of communities nationwide.
