Dollar General makes management appointments

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General Corp. has promoted Mike Wilkins to senior vice president and general merchandising manager, with responsibility for the health, beauty, paper and cleaning categories as well as the retailer’s private brands.

The chain has also appointed Jim Smits to the post of senior vice president and general merchandising manager, with oversight of food, beverage, pet care and perishables. Smits joins Dollar General from Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., now part of BI-LO Inc.

Other promotions include Jimmy Stegall, who has been elevated to senior director of merchandising over beer/wine and cookies/candles/snacks; and Brian Hartshorn, who has been named senior director of merchandising with responsibility for food and pet care.

Wilkins has been with Dollar General since 2008, serving as vice president and divisional merchandising manager. He joined Dollar General from CVS Caremark Corp., where he was a divisional merchandise manager. Prior to that he spent several years with Genuardi’s Family Markets, a subsidiary of Safeway Inc., and Giant Foods Inc. of Landover, Md., a division of Ahold USA.

At Winn-Dixie, Smits was group vice president of perishables. During the course of a 30-plus year career in the supermarket industry, Smits was group vice president of fresh foods merchandising at Albertsons Inc. and Supervalu Inc. Prior to that he worked for four years at Ahold USA and 23 years at H-E-B. At Dollar General, Stegall and Hartshorn report to Smits.
