Also on Monday, the dollar store chain said it has appointed David D’Arezzo as executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

“Dollar General is an exceptional company because of our people,” said chairman and chief executive officer Rick Dreiling. “As the company has nearly doubled its sales since 2007, this new reporting structure will allow us to continue to capture growth opportunities ahead of us and effectively leverage our infrastructure while allowing me to focus more of my attention on overall strategy and long-term growth.”

Vasos, a 25-year retail veteran, joined Dollar General in December 2008 as executive VP and chief merchandising officer. He is credited with rebuilding the retailer’s merchant team and leading a transformation of the chain’s merchandising strategy that has brought it into the mass market mainstream.

Before joining Dollar General, Vasos had been executive VP and COO at Longs Drug Stores. Prior to that he had served as senior vice president and chief merchandising officer for the California drug chain. He has also held leadership positions at Eckerd Corp. and Phar-Mor Food and Drug.

D’Arezzo joins Dollar General after serving most recently as executive VP and COO of Grocers Supply, a grocery wholesale distributor based in Houston that also operates Fiesta Mart, a Hispanic supermarket format. Before that, D’Arezzo was senior VP and chief merchandising officer of Duane Reade, where Dreiling served as chairman, president and CEO before coming to Dollar General.

“The alignment of our organization across store operations, merchandising and supply chain with the promotion of Todd to chief operating officer and the addition of David will create an even stronger management team and position us well for future growth,” Dreiling continued.

“Dollar General has strong management depth across the organization, which clearly understands our industry, our operations and our people. Now is the perfect time to strengthen that expertise with the addition of David to the team. Having personally experienced the impact he made at Duane Reade, I believe his vision, ability to drive results and deep experience across several industries will provide a unique perspective to Dollar General.”
