HUNT, Texas — Dollar General, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and Reading Is Fundamental are supporting the Hunt Independent School District with funding, books and a renovated library space as the Texas Hill Country community continues to recover from devastating flooding in July 2025.
Dollar General surprised the district with a $50,000 donation through its Reading Revolution program. The partnership also provided a newly renovated reading corner at Hunt School, featuring 1,000 book titles, more than 600 books for students’ personal libraries, and additional support for teachers and staff.
Hunt ISD opened its schools to first responders and volunteers after the Guadalupe River flooding, offering places to sleep, eat, and regroup during response and recovery efforts. The literacy initiative coincides with the district’s 100th anniversary.
“We are honored to partner with Reading Is Fundamental to support Hunt educators and students in enhancing their literacy and educational resources,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and Dollar General’s vice president of corporate social responsibility and philanthropy. “We recognize the importance of ensuring students have continued access to the books, resources and learning environments that support academic success. Through this library reading corner renovation, new books and DG donation, we hope to help create opportunities for Hunt students to learn, grow and thrive for years to come.”
Dollar General and RIF employee volunteers assembled the new reading corner, featuring custom bookshelves, seating, and a mural by local artist Callie Stelter. RIF also provided three new books to each student, totaling more than 600 books. Teachers and staff received $25 Dollar General gift cards for supplies and materials.
“Reading accessibility really offers the power of connection,” said Alicia Levi, RIF’s president and CEO. “There is a need for spaces like these, especially in rural communities with less access to public libraries, and RIF is thrilled to be joining our friends at Dollar General to help provide that access.”
The district can use the $50,000 Reading Revolution donation for books, technology programs, computers, and other educational resources. Since the program began in 2013, Dollar General has awarded more than $5 million to 137 schools and literacy-focused nonprofit organizations.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation and RIF have partnered since 2004, supporting nearly 1 million students and distributing more than 2.2 million books and literacy resources in Dollar General communities.
