Dollar General Corp. will roll out a new store prototype next year at all new, relocated and remodeled stores. It features a new layout that is designed to make shopping easier and will feature expanded offerings of fresh food and health and beauty aids.

Chief executive officer Todd Vasos discussed the prototype during a conference call with analysts and shareholders following release of Dollar General’s fiscal second quarter earnings late last month. The new prototype is one of a number of initiatives the retailer has planned for 2016 to drive growth, Vasos said.

The concept has tested well, Vasos remarked, with increased cooler penetration permitting the company to offer more perishables and thereby drive additional trips and increase basket size. "This is a big opportunity that we know how to capitalize on, as we have already increased the cooler count, on average, by just over 50% since 2008."

Dollar General’s ongoing affordability initiative will be "front and center with the new fresh approach," he added.
