Dollar Tree has a new operations chief. Michael Witynski, 52, was named chief operating officer on Thursday, responsible for operations of Dollar Tree stores in the United States and Canada.
"Mike is an accomplished retailer. He has been a key leader in Dollar Tree’s continued growth and operating performance since joining the company in 2010," said Bob Sasser, Dollar Tree’s chief executive officer. "This leadership appointment is a component of our ongoing integration following our Family Dollar acquisition."
Witynski succeeds Gary Philbin, 58, who assumed the role of president and COO of Family Dollar when Dollar Tree’s takeover of Family Dollar closed on July 6.
Witynski had been serving as Dollar Tree’s senior vice president of stores. He also has had 29 years of experience in the grocery store business, with executive experience at Shaw’s Supermarkets Inc. and Supervalu Inc.
With the Family Dollar deal done, Dollar Tree executives are focused on integrating the two companies. The combined enterprise has 13,000 stores in 48 states and five Canadian provinces.
The Family Dollar brand will live on, though Sasser has said he sees an opportunity in re-bannering some stores to make sure the right store is put in front of the right customer.
Dollar Tree sells all items for $1 or less, while Family Dollar sells products, including national brands, generally for about $10 or less.
"We plan to leverage best practices across both organizations to deliver significant cost synergies," Sasser said after the deal closed. "Combined, our growth potential is enhanced with improved opportunities to increase store productivity and to open more stores across multiple banners."
