SAN FRANCISCO — DoorDash is reportedly close to a deal to acquire Instacart parent Maplebear Inc.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the company could announce the acquisition this week, barring a last-minute breakdown in a deal valued at roughly $17 billion. The newspaper cited sources with knowledge of the negotiations who spoke on condition that they would not be identified.
Other news outlets have reported that Instacart recently held talks to sell itself to Uber Technologies Inc.
The acquisition of Instacart would add a major grocery delivery partner to DoorDash, which began by delivering food from restaurants and has since expanded to also serve major retailers.
Instacart also operates an enterprise business for grocers that contributes a significant share of its total revenue. Many independent grocers have turned to Instacart’s purpose-built technology to manage grocery complexity and to use Instacart’s advertising and data capabilities to grow.
