Family Dollar Stores Inc. is adding more than 400 items to its grocery lineup and cutting prices on some 1,000 items, including food brands such as Kraft Foods, Hellman’s and Ragu.
"These new, low prices can be found in every department throughout the store — from food to home cleaning and laundry care, as well as housewares and apparel," the company said in a statement.
Family Dollar is the nation’s second-largest dollar store, behind Dollar General Corp., with 8,100 stores in 45 states and the District of Columbia.
The company has enlisted Pat Neely, a cookbook author, co-owner of Neely’s Bar-B-Que restaurant in Memphis and Food Network television personality, to promote the stores’ new initiatives.
As part of the rollout, Family Dollar is sponsoring a contest to see who can make the best meal for four people for $15 or less. The winner will travel to Memphis to cook with Neely in his home.
Family Dollar also is co-sponsoring a program with Feeding America aimed at giving children a healthy start to the day.
"At Family Dollar, our focus is solely on our customer," says Jason Reiser, the retailer’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "It’s important for us to constantly evaluate our assortment, making sure that we have the products and national brands that are relevant to her and her family, always at a great everyday value."
