MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores Inc. named Brian Hancock as senior vice president of supply chain, reporting to chairman and chief executive officer Howard Levine.

"With Brian’s diverse and extensive background in merchandising, logistics and strategic planning, I know his expertise will help our team achieve our current and future growth initiatives," Levine said in a statement released on Monday.
Hancock comes to Family Dollar from Martin-Brower Co., where he was president of the North America division. Martin-Brower is one of the biggest suppliers of food and materials to McDonald’s Corp.
Earlier, Hancock was vice president of global supply chain at home appliance maker Whirlpool Corp., and he served in various positions at Schneider National Inc., a provider of transportation and logistical support services.
Hancock earned a master’s degree in business from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Family Dollar is the nation’s second-largest dollar store, behind Dollar General Corp., with 8,100 stores in 45 states and Washington, D.C.
The company was founded in1959 by Levine’s father, Leon Levine, who had grown up in his family’s retail business and wanted to operate a low-overhead, self-service store selling merchandise for under $2. Levine, then 22, opened his first store in Charlotte, N.C.
