In an effort to encourage meal preparation at home, the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) Foundation has announced a marketing initiative to help food retailers promote families’ eating dinner together.
The initiative, "National Family Meals Month," debuts in September. The monthlong communications campaign will provide grocery retailers with a "unified theme and turnkey promotional tools to encourage consumers to lean on their local supermarket to prepare one more family meal per week at home."
According to the FMI Foundation, studies have demonstrated the long-term health and academic and societal benefits of eating meals together as a family. A 2013 Harris poll, however, found that only 30% of American families share dinner every night.
"Our members are doing more than ever to inspire and support home cooking, from quick dinner solutions, cooking classes and nutrition advice to shortcuts like pre-prepped ingredients and freshly prepared entrees," FMI Foundation executive director Cathy Polley said. "FMI’s resources will give members a new way to showcase these creative meal programs."
