The awards were presented by FMI chairman Jerry Garland, president and chief executive officer of Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc., and FMI president and CEO Leslie Sarasin.

Wilken, who manages the Hy-Vee store in Charles City, Iowa, won the award in the category of chains with more than 200 stores.

Brian Hayes, who manages a Super Saver outlet in Lincoln, Neb., was the winner among chains operating fewer than 50 stores, and Mark Hubbard, who manages a Food City in Kingsport, Tenn., won the award for managers working at chains with 50 to 199 stores.

In the international category, the winner was Charlynne Stunder, a store manager with Overwaitea Food Group in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This year, FMI added an additional category called the Store Manager People’s Pick Award. Profiles and photos of the 10 Store Manager Awards finalists were posted to the FMI Facebook page, and the post with the most “likes” after one week received the People’s Pick Award. That resulted in a tie, with the award going to Hubbard of Food City and Steve Gannon, who manages a Winn Dixie in Jacksonville, Fla.

"Store managers are truly the superheroes of the food retail industry, working tirelessly on behalf of their customers, their companies, their employees and their communities," Sarasin said.
