SALISBURY, N.C. – With every swish of the net, college basketball players helped bring meals to neighbors in need. Through its Score to Give More program, Food Lion Feeds teamed up with 51 collegiate basketball teams—including 15 women’s programs—during the 2024-25 season, helping to provide more than 1.6 million meals to combat food insecurity across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
For every free throw made during the regular season and tournaments, Food Lion Feeds donated the equivalent of 100 meals, up to 30,000 per team. Since launching in 2019, the program has supplied more than 6.5 million meals, supporting campus food pantries or local Feeding America partner food banks.
“The Score to Give More Program is about raising awareness about food insecurity in our communities and engaging college students in the fight against hunger,” said Kevin Durkee, Manager of Food Lion Feeds. “It also strengthens our college partnerships and supports our students and student-athletes.”
This year’s participating schools spanned eight states—including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland—and hit hundreds of free throws to meet their goals. Standout efforts came from schools like Appalachian State University, Bluefield State University, and Duke University, each earning the full 30,000-meal donation.
The campaign is part of a broader commitment by Food Lion Feeds, which has donated more than 1.5 billion meals since its founding in 2014 and aims to donate 3 billion meals by 2032. Food Lion also runs the Sack to Give Back initiative, donating meals for quarterback sacks during the college football season.
