LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. — FreshDirect, an online retailer of grocery and fresh food, will expand its service to customers in 90 ZIP codes in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

FreshDirect, an online retailer of grocery and fresh food, will expand its service to customers in 90 ZIP codes in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The latest expansion follows a January growth wave that saw the company expand from Center-City Philadelphia into eight surrounding suburban counties.

"We’re excited to offer our extensive, locally sourced fresh food products to residents in all three states," says Jason Ackerman, FreshDirect chief executive officer and cofounder. "With our suburban customer growth outpacing customer growth in urban areas, the demand is one of the key drivers for our ahead-of-schedule expansion into northern and southern New Jersey. This extended delivery footprint will also bridge our successful operations in the New York metro and greater Philadelphia area and reach the growing demand from suburban customers."

The largest expansion territory encompasses 67 ZIP codes and 10 counties in New Jersey, including Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union counties in the north and Gloucester and Camden counties in southern New Jersey.

FreshDirect currently services more than 80% of the greater New York area. It entered Center-City Philadelphia in October 2012 and three months later had attracted 50% more customers than planned. That success triggered the January move into eight surrounding counties.

According to the company, it sources its fresh food offerings from a range of organic, sustainable, grass-fed heritage breeds and fair-trade farmers and organizations across the United States, many located within 300 miles of the company’s service area.
