Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, a unit of Tesco PLC, has opened a an ultra-compact variant of its 10,000 square-foot prototype at the corner of La Cienega Blvd. and 18th Street in Los Angeles.
The Fresh & Easy Express unit measures about 3,000 square feet and stocks approximately 2,700 SKUs, roughly half the 5,500 SKU count of its larger stores. The grab-and-go section, however, is similar to that in the larger outlets.
The company plans to open four more Express stores in southern California before the end of its fiscal year in late February. The additional test units will be located in Hermosa Beach, Seal Beach, Laguna Niguel and San Pedro.
According to Fresh & Easy management, the new, small prototype gives the chain the ability to take advantage of smaller sites in desirable neighborhoods with a high residential population and considerable foot traffic.
