General Mills completes cereal color transition

Lucky Charms and Trix are among the General Mills cereals now made without certified colors as the company advances a broader portfolio transition.

MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills has removed certified colors from all of its U.S. cereals, completing a transition the company committed to finishing by summer 2026.

The milestone means cereals, including Lucky Charms and Trix, are now made without certified colors. General Mills said the change brings the share of its U.S. retail portfolio that has completed the transition to 90%.

“As the leader in cereal, General Mills is focused on giving people what they are looking for from the brands they know and love,” said Bethany Quam, president of Big G Cereal at General Mills. “This achievement reflects how we are evolving with consumer needs while continuing to offer food that tastes great, delivers quality and provides value.”

The cereal transition follows General Mills’ removal of certified colors from all of its K-12 school foods, a milestone the company completed in March.

General Mills said it remains on track to eliminate certified colors across its entire U.S. retail portfolio by the end of 2027. The remaining categories include fruit snacks and baking products.

The company is also expanding its product lineup to address changing consumer nutrition preferences. General Mills said it plans to launch more than twice as many new products aligned with those preferences during the current fiscal year as it did two years ago, including products offering more protein and fiber as well as foods made with familiar ingredients.

The certified-color initiative comes as food manufacturers respond to changing consumer preferences and increased scrutiny of synthetic food dyes. General Mills said the transition is part of its broader effort to offer consumers more choices while maintaining taste, quality and value.
