Amazon.com Inc. has extended its “Get It Today” same-day delivery service to the metropolitan areas of Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

More than 1 million items across a broad range of categories are now available for same-day delivery.

Amazon Prime members can order as many items as they wish for a single fee of $5.99 and, if they order by noon, can receive eligible items the same day, seven days a week. Non-Prime members pay a fee of $9.98 for the first item and 99 cents for each individual item.

"New convenient pricing allows Prime members to fill up their same-day shopping cart with everything they may need for one low price," says Greg Greeley, vice president of Amazon Prime. "With more than a million eligible items, we aim to offer the largest same-day selection at the lowest price."

The service applies to such categories as household needs, health and beauty aids, baby products, toys, movies and games, electronics, office and school supplies (including textbooks), sporting goods, apparel, and home accessories. Examples include baby wipes, infant formula, shampoo, granola bars, sunscreen, memory cards and even refrigerator filters.

Besides items included in the "Get It Today" service, millions of products can be purchased for delivery the next day by using the "Get It by Tomorrow" filter on the Amazon website. Amazon Prime membership, which costs $99 per year, offers unlimited free two-day shipping on more than 20 million items as well as unlimited streaming of movies and TV episodes and 1 million songs. In addition, more than 500,000 books can be borrowed through the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

The Get It Today program for Prime members is already available in the major metro markets of Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle.
