Grubhub moves into grocery with Instacart partnership

Grubhub customers can now order from Instacart’s network of more than a thousand national, regional, and local retail banners across the U.S.

CHICAGO and SAN FRANCISCO — Grubhub is expanding beyond restaurant delivery in a major way through a new partnership with Instacart, bringing grocery shopping directly to the Grubhub app and website. The collaboration allows customers to order from Instacart’s network of more than 1,000 national, regional, and local grocery retailers across the U.S., combining Grubhub’s large user base with Instacart’s extensive fulfillment capabilities.

The grocery experience will be entirely within Grubhub’s platform, while Instacart manages order fulfillment and delivery through its shopper network. Customers can tap the Grocery icon in the Grubhub app, select a nearby store, add items to their cart, and check out, tracking their delivery in real time just like they would with restaurant orders. The rollout begins this week and will be available nationwide by the end of October, with the option to order from select pharmacies expected to follow later this year.

“This partnership marks an exciting step forward for Grubhub,” said Howard Migdal, CEO of Grubhub. “With nearly 20 million customers and access to over 415,000 restaurants, we’re now expanding our platform to include groceries powered by Instacart—delivering an unmatched level of choice and value. By integrating Instacart into our platform, we’re making it easier than ever for customers to get everything they need, from their favorite meals to everyday essentials.”

Ryan Hamburger, Instacart’s vice president of commercial partnerships, called the collaboration a natural extension of the company’s mission. “We’re proud to serve as Grubhub’s grocery delivery partner, bringing the Instacart experience directly to millions of Grubhub customers,” he said. “With our unmatched selection of grocers and fulfillment technology, we’re helping Grubhub expand its platform and reach.”

To celebrate the launch, Grubhub+ members can enjoy $0 standard delivery fees on eligible grocery orders of $25 or more from participating retailers. Meanwhile, all customers can get 30% off up to three grocery orders of $75 or more during the first three months of the rollout.

The partnership highlights the growing overlap between restaurant delivery and online grocery shopping as companies seek to capture more of consumers’ weekly food spending. By joining forces, Grubhub and Instacart are positioning themselves to compete more directly with rivals like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Walmart+, offering customers a single platform for both takeout and essential household shopping.
