NEW YORK — Harvey Alstodt, an executive who played a key role in the success of Del Laboratories’ beauty products for more than two decades, passed away on June 3 at the age of 83 following a prolonged illness. Alstodt, renowned for his contributions to the beauty industry, joined Del Laboratories in 1985 after leaving the eyewear company Foster Grant. At the time, Del was a nascent player in the beauty sector, with its Sally Hansen nail polish as its standout product.

During his tenure as executive vice president of sales for cosmetics, Alstodt played a crucial role in propelling Sally Hansen’s ascent in a market dominated by industry giant Revlon. Alstodt helped Sally Hansen emerge as the leading nail brand, capturing an impressive market share of more than 80%.

In 2007, Del Laboratories was acquired by Coty, marking a significant milestone in the company’s history. Following a brief hiatus from the industry, Alstodt returned, undeterred by health challenges, to establish MBA Beauty. One of MBA Beauty’s inaugural collections, Confetti nail color, debuted exclusively at CVS. Alstodt also founded a company called Diversified Beauty Products, which successfully marketed the Dr. Marvey nail treatment.

Alstodt is remembered for his tenacity and competitive spirit, as well as for his mentorship and relationship-building skills.
