Interview: CARE Pharmacy CEO Mike Wysong on the future of pharmacy

In this exclusive interview, Wysong explains how community pharmacy is shifting from just dispensing to a high-tech, high-touch healthcare model.

Editor’s Note: Jeffrey Friedman, president of retailmediaIQ, recently sat down with Mike Wysong, chief executive officer of CARE Pharmacies, and came away inspired by both the conversation and the vision Wysong brings to the future of pharmacy and patient care. In the article below, Friedman shares highlights from that conversation.

There’s something genuinely refreshing about the way Mike Wysong talks about pharmacy. You can hear the quiet passion in his voice when he describes what community pharmacies are becoming.

“We’re no longer just filling prescriptions,” he said. “We’re becoming high-tech, high-touch care providers, delivering proactive, personalized and preventative care where patients need it most.”

Under Wysong’s leadership, CARE Pharmacies has grown into a national network helping redefine what patient-centered care looks like. A major part of that evolution has been the expansion of specialty pharmacy services and high-touch patient engagement programs focused on individuals managing chronic and complex conditions.

One area Wysong spoke passionately about was CARE’s work with AARP to advance at-home care initiatives. Through this partnership, CARE is focused on connecting with patients in the home setting in a more meaningful and supportive way — providing education, guidance and personalized engagement to help patients better manage their health while maintaining independence and dignity.

“Our goal is to meet patients where they are — literally and figuratively,” Wysong said. “We want to treat them with dignity and give them the support they need to live healthier lives at home.”

From his time serving as chairman of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores to his ongoing leadership across the industry, Wysong has consistently approached health care with humility, empathy and collaboration. He listens first, builds bridges across organizations, and keeps the patient at the center of every conversation and decision.

In a health care landscape evolving at record speed, his people-first leadership style feels both refreshing and necessary.

Wysong isn’t just talking about the future of pharmacy — he’s actively helping build it, one innovation and one relationship at a time. And after hearing his perspective firsthand, it’s clear that leaders like Wysong are helping shape a more connected, compassionate future for health care.
