Jacksons Food Stores acquires Redwood Oil Company

The transaction nearly doubles Idaho-based Jacksons’ California locations to 54, from Santa Rosa to Crescent City near Oregon.

MERIDAN, Idaho — Jacksons Food Stores revealed it has acquired Redwood Oil Company, the longtime operator of the Redwood Market c-store chain in Northern California. First reported by C-Store Dive, the transaction nearly doubles Idaho-based Jacksons’ California footprint to 54 locations, extending its reach from Santa Rosa to Crescent City, near the Oregon border.

Todd Michael, Jacksons’ senior vice president of merchandising, marketing, and procurement, told C-Store Dive that Redwood’s strong foodservice program was the driving force behind the acquisition. Most of the Redwood Market stores feature full-service kitchens and made-to-order offerings — a first for Jacksons. The centerpiece is the Aztec Grill program, which offers customizable burritos, bowls, fajitas, quesadillas and other meals across dayparts.

Michael noted that the Redwood Market sites will be temporarily renamed “Redwoods by Jacksons,” while the company evaluates long-term branding. “We want to make sure that we’re doing the right thing with the branding and the people that have been supporting those stores over the years and in all those towns,” he said. The lone ExtraMile-branded site will be converted to an ExtraMile by Jacksons.

Store conversions began on August 18 and are expected to wrap up by August 27, with integrations including Jackson’s product assortment and its Let’s Go rewards program. Aztec Grill signage will remain on the buildings as Jacksons tests which elements can be scaled across its wider network of more than 300 stores in eight states.

Michael added that Redwood’s loyal associates and deep community connections make the deal even more meaningful. “We’re really excited to get into those communities we haven’t been before and continue to grow our brand,” he said.
