Jewel-Osco has named Scott Hays as vice president of operations. He will be responsible for overseeing the ongoing remodeling of the company’s Chicago-area grocery stores and the opening of five locations recently acquired from the Dominick’s chain.
Hays arrives from parent Albertsons LLC, where he spent the past eight years in Texas as a district manager.
"Scott’s years of experience with Albertsons combined with his vast knowledge of the grocery industry will enable him to mentor and educate his team to reach the highest level of excellence," says Jewel-Osco president Shane Sampson.
Jewel-Osco operates about 185 combination food and drug stores, mostly in Illinois but also in Indiana and Iowa. The regional chain is the largest seller of groceries in the competitive Chicago market, with more than 30 stores.
Jewel-Osco is investing about $100 million to upgrade stores and bring new outlets on line. The company says it will remodel more than two dozen stores this year.
Jewel-Osco reopened four former Dominick’s stores under its banner in January. It acquired another five Dominick’s outlets last month from Safeway Inc.
Hays started with Albertsons 30 years ago as a grocery clerk. At Jewel-Osco, he succeeds Jim Rice, who was recently named president of the company’s Shaw’s division in New England.
