K-beauty pioneer appoints a U.S. CEO

Appointment of Gaeun Kwon comes as retailer Olive Young opens its first U.S. stores.

Olive Young, Korea’s leading retailer of beauty and skin care products, has appointed Gaeun Kwon as chief executive officer of Olive Young USA. Kwon had been serving as director of global business at the retailer, which has 1,390 stores in South Korea and sells some 64,000 products.

The retailer, owned by conglomerate CJ Group, is entering the world’s largest beauty market in May with a store set to open in Pasadena, Calif., envisioned as a K-beauty showcase combining the brands, AI-powered skin analysis, and personalized consultations that have made Olive Young a thriving global beauty and wellness platform.

“For more than two decades, Olive Young has helped shape how consumers discover and engage with beauty in Korea, and our next focus is the U.S.,” Kwon said in a press release. “By combining Korea’s fast-moving innovation ecosystem with localized market insight, we are committed to building an omnichannel beauty platform that not only introduces new brands and trends but also fosters deeper consumer education and long-term brand growth.”

Additional locations are planned for 2026, including a “preview store” in Los Angeles’ Westfield Century City mall that will open ahead of the planned Pasadena launch in late May.

Olive Young has opened an inaugural North America logistics center in Bloomington, Calif., as it ramps up its presence in the region. Later this year, Olive Young is introducing a curated K-beauty assortment to Sephora online and in 650 North America stores.

Olive Young’s own stores will feature in-house lines including Colorgram, Bringgreen, and Bioheal Boh along with popular Korean brands such as Mixsoon, Dr. Althea, and Sungboon Editor.
