BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Kath McLay has led Walmart International since August 2023, when she replaced Judith McKenna, who retired. McKenna had led an aggressive reshaping of the International portfolio during her six-year tenure; McLay is now leading the division on a growth path.

With operations in 18 countries worldwide and 500,000 associates serving 80 million customers a week, Walmart International is the largest global omnichannel retailer in the world. During fiscal 2025 (which ended in January) the division achieved the highest growth rates in sales and operating profit of Walmart’s three operating segments, with net sales up 6.3% (9.1% under constant currency exchange rates) while operating income climbed 12.1% (17% in constant currency).

The top-line growth was driven by operations in China, Mexico (Walmex) and Canada, with customer traffic and unit volume increasing in all three markets. During Walmart’s fourth quarter earnings conference call, McLay commented on the strong results in Walmart Canada.

“We’re pleased with the top-line growth we’re getting in Canada,” she said. “But one of the real highlights for me has been the e-com performance, which has been up 30%. And their growth has accelerated every quarter over the last year. We’re seeing our offering in Canada really resonating with the customer.”

McLay brought an impressive background in global retail to her current position. She joined Walmart in 2015 from Australian retailer Woolworths Ltd. After successfully leading diverse initiatives, she was appointed chief executive officer of Sam’s Club in November 2019 and led the chain to a remarkable performance that included a 43% increase in sales and 12 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth.
