“My mission is to help create an environment where pharmacists and pharmacy teams can do their best work for patients,” says Scanlon, who joined the company as a retail pharmacist in 2007 and assumed her current role last month. “That means removing barriers, investing in the right technology, providing clarity and supporting models of care that allow pharmacists to practice at the top of their licenses. I’m focused on continuing to align our operations with our overall tenets — patient safety, trust and outcomes.”

Scanlon has a strong foundation on which to build. An early adopter of central-fill technology that takes much of the routine work out of the stores, Publix puts a premium on patient-pharmacist interaction.

“Pharmacists are often the most accessible health care providers in a community, and when we enable them to focus on clinical care, prevention and education, we can meaningfully improve wellness while also helping reduce overall health care spend,” she says. “I’m especially energized by work that connects patient care with long-term outcomes — whether that’s better adherence, improved chronic disease management or helping patients navigate complex health care decisions.”
