Kroger plans first new Houston-area store in a decade

The retailer intends to develop a 100,064-square-foot Marketplace store in Hockley, Texas, northwest of Houston.

HOCKLEY, Texas — Kroger is expanding its Houston footprint with plans to build its first new store in the market in more than a decade, targeting one of the region's fastest-growing residential corridors.

The Cincinnati-based grocer intends to develop a 100,064-square-foot Marketplace store in Hockley, Texas, northwest of Houston. According Realty News Report a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction on the approximately $24 million project is slated for completion in December 2027.

The store will anchor the commercial district at Jubilee, a master-planned community from Johnson Development that is expected to include nearly 5,000 homes upon completion. The 1,600-acre development is located southwest of Highway 290 and Katy Hockley Road, several miles west of the Grand Parkway, in an area experiencing significant housing growth.

The Hockley project aligns with Kroger's recently announced long-term growth agenda, which calls for a renewed focus on store expansion, modernization and customer experience. During an investor presentation, the retailer outlined plans to open approximately 110 new stores by 2029 while continuing to remodel existing locations across its network.

"Kroger has a clear opportunity to unlock our full potential and build America's Favorite Grocer," CEO Greg Foran said in announcing the strategy. "We are making value more visible and focusing resources closer to the customer where we see the highest returns."

As part of the plan, Kroger will invest in markets where it sees strong growth opportunities while emphasizing a "food-first" approach centered on fresh products, prepared foods and ready-to-cook meal solutions.

The retailer plans to deploy three primary store formats ranging from roughly 50,000 square feet to approximately 99,000 square feet, depending on market demand and growth potential. The Hockley location, at just over 100,000 square feet, reflects Kroger's strategy of building larger-format stores in high-growth markets where the company sees opportunities to capture additional share and serve a broader range of shopping occasions.

New 50,000- to 99,000-square-foot concepts are expected to drive $7 billion in annualized sales growth while expanding Kroger’s reach in high-growth markets.

For Kroger, the project represents more than a new store opening. It signals a return to physical expansion in the Houston area as the company seeks to capitalize on population growth, suburban development and evolving consumer demand for fresh food and convenience-focused grocery offerings.
