GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Local dignitaries last month joined in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of Meijer Inc.’s first small-format store in metropolitan Detroit. Woodward Corner Market anchors a mixed-use development in Royal Oak, Mich. The 41,000-square-foot store features open-air elements, with 25-foot ceilings, a pedestrian-friendly design and six garage-style doors that open to an outdoor fresh produce and floral area.
Shoppers find a mix of fresh food, baked goods, deli selections, and local and convenient food at low prices, says Natalie Rubino, the store’s manager.
“Woodward Corner Market is unique, and our team has been hard at work to ensure we have the best products on our shelves to meet the community’s needs,” Rubino says.
Meijer is stocking the shelves with a mix of store brand, national brands and 2,000 local offerings such as Daily Dozen Doughnuts, New York Bagel and Bath Savvy Soaps. Additional features include a Great Lakes Coffee coffee shop that specializes in nitro brews; an extensive beer, wine and liquor counter; and an expansive international food aisle.
The market is not supplying single-use plastic or paper bags at checkout and is instead encouraging customers to bring their own reusable bags or purchase two types of reusable and recyclable plastic bags, starting at 10 cents apiece.
“Meijer is committed to lessening our impact on the environment, and we saw an opportunity to reinforce that commitment by not offering traditional single-use plastic bags from Day One at Woodward Corner Market,” Rubino says. “We understand this is not a common practice, but we believe this is the right move for this community and our customers.”
