DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. senior vice president Joe Magnacca has been promoted to executive vice president.

Walgreen Co. senior vice president Joe Magnacca has been promoted to executive vice president.

The move, which became effective at the start of February, will see Magnacca continue as the drug chain’s president of daily living products and solutions.

The title change does not change Magnacca’s role with Walgreens. He will continue to oversee the drug chain’s merchandising and inventory strategy, private brands, insights and analytics, as well as being the top executive for Duane Reade, the 250-store chain Walgreens acquired in 2010.

A retail industry veteran of more than 20 years, Magnacca joined Duane Reade in 2008 as senior vice president and chief merchandising officer.

He was later promoted to executive vice president at Duane Reade and then to president of the chain following its acquisition by Walgreens.

Magnacca has been Walgreens president of daily living products and solutions since 2011.
Earlier in his career Magnacca was vice president of marketing and merchandising at the Canadian supermarket chain Loblaw Cos. and executive vice president of merchandising and category management at Shoppers Drug Mart.

"Joe plays a critical role in our strategy to step out of the traditional drug store channel and deliver the ‘Well Experience’ to our customers," Walgreens president and chief executive officer Greg Wasson says. "His exceptional strategic market focus means we are now better positioned than ever to meet the daily living needs of our customers."
