Mary Leonard is on a mission to help consumers navigate everyday self-care decisions with clarity and confidence. As senior vice president and executive director of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association’s Health in Hand Foundation, the association’s educational and charitable arm, she leads national initiatives that promote the safe and responsible use of over-the-counter medicines, nutritional supplements and O-T-C medical devices.
“The most rewarding part of my work is knowing that we help people make confident, responsible self-care choices every day,” said Leonard. “By supporting safe and effective decision making at the point of purchase, we empower families to take charge of their health and strengthen the communities we serve.”
Under her leadership, the foundation has developed new ways to deliver consumer education in retail settings at the point of purchase. Health in Hand launched a first-ever national self-care education partnership with Family Dollar, reaching up to 80 million shoppers across 7,000 stores in 48 states. By strengthening shopper understanding at shelf, particularly at retailers without pharmacies, these initiatives not only improve safety outcomes but enhance category transparency and consumer trust.
