Meijer expands vaccine access ahead of fall respiratory illness season

The retailer’s pharmacists are now offering flu, pneumococcal, and RSV vaccinations under updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With the fall season approaching, Meijer Pharmacy is ramping up efforts to help protect Midwest communities against respiratory illnesses, placing particular emphasis on influenza vaccines while broadening access to other critical immunizations.

Pharmacies across the retailer’s footprint are now offering flu, pneumococcal, and RSV vaccinations under updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. The changes lower eligibility for both the pneumococcal and RSV vaccines to age 50, expanding access to millions of adults.

“We understand our customers want clarity and confidence when it comes to their health decisions,” said Jackie Morse, group vice president of Pharmacy and Health at Meijer. “Our pharmacists are seasoned professionals, equipped with the latest guidance and committed to helping everyone stay protected.”

Expanded Vaccine Recommendations

  • Flu vaccine: Recommended for everyone six months and older, the updated formulation is intended to curb spread during peak cold-weather months.
  • Pneumococcal vaccine: Now advised beginning at age 50, protecting against pneumonia and related complications.
  • RSV vaccine: Recommended for adults 75 and older, and newly available to those 50–74 who are at elevated risk of severe illness.
  • COVID-19 vaccine: To be offered when available, as part of comprehensive respiratory protection.

The expansion reflects heightened concerns about seasonal illness. Autumn and winter typically bring higher rates of influenza, pneumonia, and RSV, straining households and health systems alike.

Convenience and Incentives

Meijer is offering both walk-in and scheduled appointments during regular pharmacy hours, allowing families and individuals to receive personalized consultations and guidance on vaccine eligibility. Customers also earn 500 mPerks points for each vaccination, which can be redeemed for rewards in-store.

“As the one-stop shop for health and wellness, Meijer is where you can find not only the vaccines you need, but also the guidance and support our customers are looking for,” Morse added. “We invite everyone to talk with our pharmacists about eligibility, to help keep themselves and their loved ones healthy this season.”

By underscoring the flu shot as the “cornerstone” of respiratory health and expanding eligibility for other vaccines, Meijer is positioning its pharmacies as accessible, trusted hubs for preventive care.
