Meijer last month announced it would expand its online ordering and curbside pickup program, adding eight stores in Michigan and Ohio to the program that was rolled out as a pilot in April at a store here in Grand Rapids, where company headquarters are also located.

"Our customers are always looking for ways to maximize their time, and we’re delighted to expand Meijer Curbside in Michigan and Ohio," remarked Michael Ross, vice president of digital shopping and customer marketing at Meijer. "We believe the combination of listening to our customers’ needs and providing a convenient digital shopping solution provides customers with time to do other things."

Meijer said it was pleased with shoppers’ embrace of the pilot program, pointing out that 75% of weekly pickups at the store are made by repeat customers.

After a customer places an order at a company website [meijer.com/curbside], a trained team member from the store hand selects each item, heeding any instructions or personal preferences expressed by the customer, the company explained.

Shoppers can order from about 60,000 products, representing about 20% of what is on store shelves. The customer selects a preferred pickup time between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily, the company said. For orders of between one and 12 items, customers can retrieve their orders within as little as one hour. For orders of 13 or more items, customers can schedule pickup in about three hours. Orders can be placed up to three days in advance. The service costs $4.95 per order, Meijer noted, although the fee is waived during the first 30 days in which the program has become available at a new store. Meijer officials said that the quick turnaround is what sets the curbside program apart.

The curbside program was expanded from late October at a second Meijer store in Grand Rapids as well as one in Ann Arbor, Mich. The program will be introduced later this year at Meijer stores in Jenison, Mich., and Canton, Mich. Curbside pickup will be introduced early next year at four Meijer stores in Dayton, Ohio.

Meijer operates 222 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
