GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer Inc. has expanded its Shop & Scan self-checkout option to all of its stores in Ohio. The mobile shopping app allows customers to scan and bag their purchases as they shop, enabling them to avoid checkout lines and personalize their shopping trip.

Customers can download the free Meijer Mobile App and then use Shop & Scan to scan the bar codes on their purchases. It provides a viewable running total of items purchased as customers proceed through the store. When their shopping is completed, they can simply scan their mobile phone at a self-checkout lane and pay.

“We’re all challenged by time and busy schedules, so Shop & Scan allows customers the opportunity to truly be in control of their shopping trip, from the moment they walk in our stores to the minute they walk out,” says Ohio regional vice president Tom Wilson. “Customers are appreciative of the simplicity of scanning and bagging as they go because they can save time and avoid lines, speeding up their checkout experience.”

Surveys of Meijer customers indicate that the most popular program features include the integrated shopping list and the ability to clip any available mPerks coupons for items they have scanned. Those features help provide a seamless shopping experience that saves customers time and money.

According to Wilson, the Meijer Mobile App has been downloaded more than 11 million times since the initial Shop & Scan pilot launch in Michigan last year. Since then, more than 80% of Meijer customers have repeatedly used the Shop & Scan app on their shopping trips.

Extension of the Shop & Scan service throughout Ohio brings the total of stores at which it can be used to 179, including Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Shop & Scan technology works via the free Meijer Mobile App, which can be downloaded through the Apple or Android App stores.
