GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer said it is cutting prices by as much as 50% on nearly 200 back-to-school items, as part of an effort to position its stores as a one-stop destination for families shopping for the coming school year.
The discounts, which run through September 8, cover more than 50 school-supply items priced under $1, including Meijer-brand and national-brand pencils, crayons, markers, folders, notebooks, binders and erasers. Meijer Washable Glue Sticks, Crayons and Washable School Glue are priced at 25 cents each, while Washable Markers run 74 cents and Colored Pencils 50 cents.
The retailer is also discounting breakfast and lunch staples commonly bought for the school year, including instant oatmeal, pancake mix, syrup, cereal, bread, jelly and peanut butter priced under $2. Examples include Meijer Instant Oatmeal at $1.79, Meijer Complete Pancake Mix at $1.79, and Meijer Grape Jelly and Creamy Peanut Butter each at $1.89.
Don Sanderson, Meijer's chief merchandising and marketing officer, said the expanded discount list reflects the retailer's effort to consolidate back-to-school shopping into a single trip.
"Back-to-school season is an exciting time, as families prepare to help their kids start the year strong," Sanderson said. "We're committed to making it easy for families to find great value on school supplies, clothing, and everyday groceries in one stop. By expanding the number of discounted items, we're helping families check everything off their lists and head into the school year feeling confident and ready."
Meijer is also directing customers to its mPerks loyalty program for additional savings, including points earned on every dollar spent that can be redeemed for in-store coupons or fuel discounts at Meijer Express gas stations, along with personalized "hand-picked offers" coupons in the app. All promotional items are listed at meijer.com.
