WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Tops Markets LLC on May 14 opened a 52,000-square-foot Tops Friendly Market in the Rochester, N.Y., suburb of Irondequoit featuring a smaller layout the company bills as a prototype.

The new design utilizes space more effectively and allows store managers to better display products, says Frank Curci, Tops Markets’ president and chief executive officer.
A fueling station outside the store will begin operating in June, Curci says.
Over the past three years Tops Markets has invested $21 million to upgrade stores and acquire properties in the Rochester area, Curci says. The company has 14 stores, including six with fueling stations, in surrounding Monroe County, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reports.
The grocer operates 154 company-owned and five franchised outlets in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and Vermont.
