CHICAGO — IRI is continuing to collaborate with their partners at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to analyze the latest consumer purchases in Italy, France, New Zealand, the U.K and the U.S. The company just updated the report, “COVID-19 Impact: Consumer Spending Tracker,” to capture the most recent insights.

Key highlights from the research include:

  • Trends from Italy (approximately three weeks earlier to the COVID-19 crisis than the U.S., U.K. and New Zealand) and France (approximately two weeks earlier) suggest continuing heightened consumer demand.
  • In the U.S. and U.K., we see an inflection point in the week of March 1, when significant stockpiling began and a significant uptick accounting for 1.5X normal weekly sales for the week ending March 15.
  • Consumers in most countries purchased more over-the-counter healthcare in early stages of the pandemic, shifting in recent weeks to more paper products, home care and food and beverage; most categories across the store show higher growth rates as more traffic hits CPG stores.
  • E-commerce trends in Italy and France show significant increases in online shopping, particularly click and collect.
  • State-level data in the U.S. shows high incidence states having much higher impacts on food categories, particularly packaged foods, frozen foods and dairy, and following nationwide trends on non-food categories.
