WASHINGTON – The National Retail Federation has released its annual list of the Top 100 Retailers.
Compiled by Kantar, the list ranks the industry’s largest retail companies by their U.S. sales.
“This year’s list of the Top 100 Retailers largely reflects a post-pandemic return to normal,” NRF Executive Director of Research Mark Mathews said. “As consumer spending continues to moderate, retailers are prioritizing convenience and value for their customers.”
Longtime No. 1 Walmart held its top position with $635.02 billion in U.S. retail sales in 2023. Amazon.com ranked second with sales of $359.93 billion, followed by Costco Wholesale ($234.20 billion), The Kroger Co. ($149.61 billion) and The Home Depot ($150.73 billion).
Among the top 10, there were minimal shifts: Target (No. 6 to No. 7) and CVS Health Corporation (No. 7 to No. 6).
“Similar to last year, there was modest change within the top 100 retailers, particularly within the top 20,” Kantar Senior Vice President of Global Insights and Technology David Marcotte said. “These companies are substantial and have the existing capital and credit to maintain their position with ease.”
One notable jump is from Harbor Freight Tools, which continued its growth trajectory by moving 18 spots on the list from No. 80 to No. 62. With a store count increase of 8.5% – for a total of 1,410 stores – they are expanding the fastest of any retailer on the list. Also worth noting is Dollar General’s robust store growth of 5.5%, which landed at No.17 on the list.
The Top 100 Retailers are ranked by past 52/53-week annual retail sales; in almost all instances, sales used to rank companies are for retail activity in the United States only.
