TULSA, Okla. — Trader Joe’s Co. acknowledged earlier this month that it will build a store in this city’s Brookside area, the specialty grocer’s first in Oklahoma.

Trader Joe’s Co. acknowledged earlier this month that it will build a store in this city’s Brookside area, the specialty grocer’s first in Oklahoma.

The 9,500-square-foot store should be ready for a ribbon cutting by year’s end, the company said.

News outlets in Oklahoma City reported last month that Trader Joe’s was coming to their city, but a company spokesman told the Tulsa World that no such plans are in the works. The Tulsa newspaper noted that the company had been saying the same thing about Tulsa prior to the recent announcement of the Brookside store.

A number of Tulsans had been advocating for a Trader Joe’s in their community, most visibly the Tulsa Young Professionals, which in 2013 engaged in a “Bring It to Tulsa” campaign that involved the online sale of Trader Joe’s merchandise purchased from stores in Kansas City and that got the attention of Trader Joe’s officials in California.

Trader Joe’s operates about 430 stores in 40 states.
