Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix, which has almost 1,100 stores in the Southeast, will dramatically expand its presence in the Charlotte market this year. The company bought seven local BI-LO supermarkets last year, which it plans to convert to the Publix banner. The company plans to add a total of 14 Charlotte-area stores in the next two years, according to the Charlotte Observer, and is opening stores in Cary, Winston-Salem and Asheville, N.C., as well. The next two North Carolina store openings are tentatively set for this month and next.
