LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets Inc. opened its newest small-format GreenWise Market earlier this month in Lexington, S.C.
It is the fourth GreenWise Market — and the second in South Carolina — to open since Publix unveiled the revised format last year as part of its strategy to reach a new generation of loyal shoppers with features including freshly prepared food; in-store eateries serving artisan pizza; noodle bowls and hot wings; and lounge space where customers can sip cold-brewed coffee, kombucha or local beers.
“Our customers can expect to find unique and local products, as well as a gathering place for small meetings,” says Kevin Murphy, president of Publix.
The banner’s name is derived from Publix’s organic food brand. Publix operates more than 1,200 grocery stores in seven states in the Southeast.
Publix opened its first GreenWise Market in October 2018 in Tallahassee, Fla. It also has a GreenWise Market in Mount Pleasant, S.C., which opened in May, and a location in Mountain Brook, Ala., that opened last summer.
Plans for another eight GreenWise Markets are in the works, and the retailer says its real estate team continues to scout out new locations.
The newest store occupies 21,400 square feet of retail space in the Lexington Marketplace shopping center, which also houses an Ulta Beauty outlet and a Hobby Lobby store.
The GreenWise Market is divided into simply named experience zones like CARE, EATS and FINDS.
Customers visiting the POURS zone can purchase a glass of wine or beer or other beverage to enjoy while they shop or relax in one of the store’s seating areas, Publix says. The store features a multipanel mural by local artist and architect Wayne Rogers that serves as an abstract lake scene and a metaphor for what ties the town together, according to Publix.
Like all GreenWise Markets, the new Lexington store offers house-made smoked meat and sausages, store-prepared meals, and grab-and-go items featuring antibiotic-free meat and organic cheese and including vegan options; gourmet treats; organic produce; body care products; vitamins and supplements; and bulk items.
