Five top mass retailing executives were among those recognized in Fortune magazine’s list of the "Most Powerful Women" in business.
Helena Foulkes, president of CVS/pharmacy, was ranked 14th on the list of 51 women in the U.S., closely followed by Rosalind Brewer, president and chief executive officer of Sam’s Club (15th). Also making that list were Judith McKenna, chief operating officer of Walmart U.S. (30th); and Michelle Gloeckler, executive vice president of consumables, health and wellness, and U.S. manufacturing lead at Walmart U.S. (38th).
Ornella Barra, president and CEO of global wholesale and international retail at Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), ranked fifth on the magazine’s list of 25 women in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Barra, 61, is also executive vice president of WBA.
Foulkes, Barra, Brewer, McKenna and Gloeckler were among the 32 executives honored in MMR’s own special report on "Mass Market Retail’s Most Influential Women," which appeared in the June 22 edition.
Foulkes, a 20-year CVS veteran who was named head of the company’s retail division in January 2014, was also featured by Fortune in a full-length story titled "She thanks you for not smoking." The article described the 51-year-old Foulkes, who is also executive vice president of CVS Health, as "a rising star" and "the architect of customer engagement programs" that have been key to the company’s growth.
Other retailers on the list: Carol Meyrowitz, chair and CEO of TJX Co. (11th); Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of retail and online stores at Apple Inc. (16th); Barbara Rentler, CEO of Ross Stores (34th); Ann-Marie Campbell, president of Home Depot Inc.’s southern division (37th); and Shari Ballard, president of U.S. retail and chief human resources officer at Best Buy Co. (39th).
