GILBERT, Ariz. — Safeway celebrated the opening of its newest store in Gilbert last month, bringing a new grocery destination to one of the region's fastest-growing communities while investing more than $280,000 in local schools and nonprofits through the Safeway Foundation.
Located at 3960 S. Val Vista Drive, the new 64,000-square-foot store anchors The Gilmore, a mixed-use development at the northwest corner of South Val Vista Drive and East Germann Road.
The grand opening brought together local dignitaries, Arizona Cardinals’ Big Red and cheerleaders, and neighbors from across Gilbert to celebrate both a significant new addition to the region’s retail landscape and Safeway's ongoing commitment to supporting the community. Shoppers could take advantage of can’t-miss grand opening savings, with exceptional deals on everyday essentials and premium finds — including patio furniture, grills and patio heaters marked up to 90% off while supplies lasted.
To mark the opening, customers had the opportunities participate in special grand opening giveaways throughout the day. The first 300 shoppers following the ribbon cutting will receive free bags of groceries. Plus, the first 480 shoppers entering the store beginning at 6 a.m. will receive a scratcher ticket for a chance to win Safeway gift cards valued at $20 to $500. Two customers won groceries for a year.
“We’re thrilled to unveil this beautiful, highly upgraded Safeway store in Gilbert and become part of a thriving, growing community,” said Carl Huntington, president of the Southwest Division for Safeway. “This upscale store was designed to serve local families with quality products, convenience and exceptional service, while also creating meaningful partnerships with the schools, nonprofits and organizations that help Gilbert thrive."
As part of the grand opening celebration, the Safeway Foundation awarded more than $280,000 in grants to local schools and nonprofit organizations. The funding supports programs focused on hunger relief, education, youth development and community enrichment.
Among the recipients is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which received a $200,000 grant to help support its work serving individuals and families in need. Additional grants will benefit local elementary, junior high and high schools, as well as community organizations that contribute to the quality of life in Gilbert.
The new Safeway offers an elevated shopping experience, featuring a full-service pharmacy, expanded Starbucks with seating, designer floral department, premium produce section with local fruits and vegetables, top-tier organics, full-service sushi counter, and extensive wine and craft beer selection.
The meat and seafood departments offer a wide assortment of quality cuts, poultry and seafood for everyday meals and special occasions. The bakery, deli and cheese departments are designed for shoppers who want convenience without compromise, from indulgent desserts and fresh-baked favorites to domestic and international cheeses, meats, salads, sandwiches and ready-to-go meals. Andre Renoth was named Store Director.
