Since joining Dollar General in 2007, change has been one constant in Sara Montgomery’s career progression, having repeatedly stepped into newly created roles and being tasked with creating and building processes and teams and operating new models.
One of her favorite roles included DG’s first international expansion with Mi Súper Dollar General, which now operates more than 15 stores across two states. Her leadership included designing the in-store experience, partnering with local leaders in Monterrey and tailoring the strategy for Mexican customers.
“It was a rare opportunity to build something cross-cultural, strategically significant — and serve more communities,” she noted.
Today as vice president of fixtures and strategic initiatives, Montgomery helps strengthen performance and experience across DG’s nearly 21,000 stores with remodel initiatives including Project Renovate and Project Elevate. “We regularly revisit and refine layouts, sight lines and department flow to create more enjoyable shopping experiences tailored to every community we serve,” she said.
DG’s agility was highlighted in 2025 in Austin, Ind. Just weeks after the community celebrated gaining access to fresh meats and vegetables at the grand opening of its new DG Market, a fire abruptly closed the store. Montgomery’s team helped create a solution for a one-of-a-kind layout in Dollar General’s previous nearby location to ensure the community could still access the everyday essentials it depends on while the DG Market was rebuilt. For Montgomery, it was a powerful reminder of DG’s impact and an exemplification of its mission of Serving Others.
