AMITYVILLE, N.Y. — Scalp care is the new skincare. Consumers are increasingly recognizing the importance that scalp health plays in hair care, and are beginning to incorporate products into their hair care regimens that are specifically designed to cleanse, balance and treat the scalp. SheaMoisture gets to the root of the problem with the new African Black Soap Bamboo Charcoal hair care collection.

Shea MoistureThe collection works to improve scalp health and address a variety of scalp conditions, while also creating an ideal environment for healthy hair. The collection harnesses the curative powers of African Black Soap, which SheaMoisture brought to the U.S. 27 years ago. African Black Soap, also known as Anago Soap or Alata Soap, originates from West Africa. It’s not a beauty potion concocted in a skin care lab and is made from a family recipe from SheaMoisture founder Richelieu Dennis’ grandmother, Sofi Tucker, in a traditional, culturally authentic way. Leaves, Cocoa Pods, Shea Tree Bark, and Plantains are burned to an ash, which gives the soap its naturally dark color. The ash is then added to Coconut Oil and ethically-sourced Shea Butter from 15 women’s co-ops in Northern Ghana, combined with water, and brought to a boil until it dissolves. The vitamin-rich soap is then hand-stirred and set out to cure.

The brand enhanced its age-old formula to incorporate the naturally-clarifying benefits of Bamboo Charcoal to create an optimal foundation on the scalp to support strong, healthy hair. The formulations also contain Tea Tree Oil, which aids in balancing and soothing the scalp while enhancing hair’s shine. Willow Bark Extract removes impurities and excess oil caused by product build-up, as well as exfoliates a dry, flaky scalp. Powerful yet gentle, the products are suitable for daily use for women and men, and designed for both dry and oily hair.

“Scalp care is frequently overlooked, as many people have a tendency to overload hair with products and forget to clarify and remove build-up,” says Nicola Chung, senior director of innovation, Sundial Brands, manufacturer of SheaMoisture. “We’re providing an efficacious array of products that address a variety of scalp issues with just one collection. By adding Bamboo Charcoal to our original African Black Soap formula, the products gently clarify hair and scalp by lifting impurities and removing excess oils caused by build-up and external factors, such as hard water and chlorine.”
