SpartanNash taps Jay Mahabir to lead retail operations

“We will continue to enhance our shopping experience by focusing on freshness, value and convenience, and Jay will play a critical role in leading this work.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.SpartanNash has named Jay Mahabir vice president of retail operations, giving him responsibility for nearly 200 company-operated supermarkets across 10 states. The appointment, effective immediately, signals the company’s continued push to elevate both the in-store and online customer experience while advancing internal talent development across its retail organization.

Mahabir joins SpartanNash from Meijer, where he most recently served as Market Director, overseeing the retailer’s two highest-volume markets in Michigan. His background also includes leadership roles at Lowe’s and Target, where he earned accolades for associate engagement, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

In his new role, Mahabir will report to Djouma Barry, SpartanNash’s senior vice president and chief retail officer, and will focus on driving operational excellence and customer-centric innovation.

“We will continue to enhance our shopping experience by focusing on freshness, value and convenience, and Jay will play a critical role in leading this work,” Barry said in a statement. “Jay will also be focused on developing our talent pipeline, so retail Associates can maximize the career opportunities available to them across our footprint.”

Mahabir steps into the position as SpartanNash accelerates its retail growth strategy. In 2024, the company expanded its brick-and-mortar footprint through acquisitions of Metcalfe’s Market, Fresh Encounter Inc., and Markham Enterprises Inc., bolstering its presence in key Midwest markets.

SpartanNash operates primarily under banners such as Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets, and D&W Fresh Market, and complements its store network with pharmacies, fuel centers, and convenience locations. The company also runs a large wholesale business serving independent grocers, national retailers, and military commissaries.

The appointment comes amid ongoing efforts by SpartanNash to deliver a more seamless omnichannel shopping experience and strengthen its People First culture. Mahabir’s experience in high-volume markets and his record of operational leadership are expected to play a pivotal role as the company continues evolving its retail operations.
